Gammagirls - week by week

Not sure what to expect?  Here is a quick look at some of the concepts we will cover each week:

Week 1: About GammagirlsIn this introductory week of Gammagirls, you will meet your Mentors and the other girls.  You will begin to understand why the concept of Gammagirls is important, what a Gammagirl is, and how to become one!You will start talking about what it means to be a self-leader, how to increase trust in a relationship, and when to trust someone.

Week 2: The Art of CommunicationDuring this session you will discuss the importance of developing and practicing good communication skills.  Learn how to avoid the awkward silence, start a conversation with someone new, and make sure you really “hear” what someone else is saying.  You will have fun, practice communication skills, and discuss what it means to be a listener.

Week 3: Hidden Message: The Impact of the MediaThis week is all about the media and all about you.  How much is our society impacted by the media?  You will have a chance to take a different look at advertising, magazines, and music, and to determine what messages (both positive, negative, and otherwise) you are listening to, watching, and seeing on a daily basis.

Week 4: What I Like About Me: Positive Self-ImageSo maybe talking about our bodies isn’t always a comfortable subject.  Sometimes we feel like it’s not okay to like ourselves, or that we would like ourselves if we could just lose five more pounds.  But is our worth based on more than our appearance?  Our parents tell us it’s what’s on the inside that counts, but that’s not the message we get in the media or at school.  This week gives you a chance to discuss and examine cultural ideals.  Hear the experience and perspectives of the other girls in the group—and discover what makes you unique and valuable.

Week 5: Silent Conversations: Understanding Your Inner VoiceIn this session, you will learn about the empowering benefits of managing your inner voice.  This is the voice that tells us things that determine how we feel about ourselves or our situations.  You will also learn about setting appropriate boundaries to give yourself more control over your life.

Week 6: Taking Action: Problem Solving and AssertivenessThis week’s material discusses the importance of confronting and resolving problems.  Sometimes the most important thing is figuring out what the problem really is and then having the courage to do something about it.  You’ll also practice how to know and communicate what you really want and need.

Week 7: Sex, God, and You: Healthy Sexuality for TeensYes, the sex week.  You probably knew it was coming.  This is a topic that sometimes seems to be everywhere in our media and culture, and then, at other times, seems to be avoided all together.  We know what our parents or pastors say about sex, but what does the Bible say about it?  What about dating and relationships?  Where do you draw that line, and what makes a healthy relationship?  This week’s session looks to provide a more comfortable environment to discuss this material and to explore the whole spectrum—from relationships, to decisions, to boundaries, to sex itself.  Not just another “sex talk,” this is a week that you don’t want to miss!

Week 8: To Do or Not to Do: Managing RiskThere are all sorts of risks in our lives.  Sometimes fear holds us back, and sometimes it reminds us to be appropriately cautious.  Learn to evaluate appropriate risk, to overcome limiting fears, and to listen to your conscience when something doesn’t seem right.

Week 9: Big Problems, Little Problems: Being a Real FriendFriendships: we all struggle with and benefit from them.  Sometimes your friends feel like the most important thing to you, and other times you might not be sure what to think.  This week we will discuss critical issues in friendship: what a healthy friendship looks like, how to develop one, when it is appropriate to share a secret and when to keep one, problem-solving strategies, and more.  Leave with the tools to help you create and maintain healthy relationships in your teen years and throughout the rest of your life!

Week 10: Honoring your Dreams: Graduation Party! In this final session, you are given the chance to discuss your dreams and goals and begin to develop strategies to get there.  Most importantly this is your Graduation party!  Enjoy food and your new friends.  Congratulations: you are a Gammagirl!

Gammagirls // Welcome to Gammagirls
Welcome to Gammagirls

Gammagirls is a program designed to engage teenagers in conversation with adult mentors about the real life issues that they face each day.

Through group work and mentoring, Gammagirls seeks to help young women understand who God created them to be and to remain strong and focused in the midst of peer pressure.

The Gammagirls’ curriculum provides tools and information to better equip teens for the challenges through which they must navigate on their way to adulthood.  Gammagirls provides a safe place to discuss the issues that are really on their minds.

It is an interactive, short-term mentoring program designed primarily for girls between the ages of 13 and 15, although it has been successfully used with a broader age group as well as with Gammamoms!
